Lombard History!

11/25/2015

Over the last year, I have been working with our booster club to decorate our 8th grade hallway with murals and photos depicting the incredible history of this middle school with its transition from Lombard College.  While doing so, I kept coming across amazing stories and facts about this campus that had been forgotten.  I decided to compile all of this information, so it is never lost again and it can be shared amongst the Lombard Community.

I LOVE this school, and I LOVE being a small part of this legacy.  Please feel free to check this out and help spread this information.  If you are a part of the Lombard Community, than you are a part of this heritage!

Our booster club has been working very hard to raise money to continue decorating our 8th grade hallway.  Over this last weekend, we were able to have a very large mural painted.  The student's had no idea this work was getting done, and their reactions this morning were AWESOME!

Thank you to everyone who has supported this project, and it is so exciting to begin seeing our vision become a reality!

Lombard Community! - With the completion of the end of the 1st quarter, I have been able to look at some academic and disciplinary data to share with my staff.  The information below is outstanding, and this is a testament to the fantastic students and teachers here at this school.  If you have a child at Lombard, they are a part of this exciting news!

The table below shows how many office referrals and failing grades per students we currently have.  Being 25% done with the school year we are on pace for some exciting results:

8th Grade
School Year                   Total Office Referrals            Failing Grades Per Student
2014                              476                                      1.49 F’s per student
2015 (through Quarter 1)   61                                      .42 F’s per student

7th Grade
School Year                      Total Office Referrals           Failing Grades Per Student
2014                                 338                                     1.12 F’s per student
2015 (through Quarter 1)     49                                       .13 F’s per student

6th grade
School Year                         Total Office Referrals       Failing Grades Per Student
2014                                    347                                .98 F’s per student
2015 (through Quarter 1)        40                                 .15 F’s per student

In addition, Lombard has been keeping track of discipline data since 2002 using the current program.  Check out the table below.  Since 2002, we are on pace to have lowered office referrals by over 350%!

School Year                                         Total Office Referrals                    Office Referrals per Student
2002 (First year of office referral             2586 (For the entire school year)   5.09 Referrals per Student
data through current data system)

2015 (Current School year)                      175 (Total as of Nov. 2)                .37 Referrals per Student

I am looking for people that have photos of actual basketball games played in the Zephyr Dome.  I want to get these scanned and blown up to hang as posters outside of the hallway of our current gym here at Lombard.  The booster club and I have been working very hard to fundraise to continue decorating this area of the school.  Please help us honor the tradition of the Zephyr Dome!  If anyone has any photos they would let us borrow please drop them off here at Lombard Middle School, and we will  get them right back to you ASAP.  If you have a cool picture to share, we may use it as an actual poster at our school!

BE A PART OF SOMETHING SPECIAL NEXT TUESDAY NIGHT!

10/9/2015

Next Tuesday night at 5:30pm we are having our next booster club meeting in the library at Lombard Middle School.  At the last meeting, we had one of the largest crowds that we have ever had.  Everyone is invited, and it is our goal to have all 500 of our kids and families represented at these meetings.  Booster club meetings are where parents and school administration can discuss ideas and items for the improvement of the school.  We REALLY have some COOL upcoming projects going on, and we want your input!  Please come!  Everyone is welcome!

Also, I wanted to again say a very special thank you to the First Presbyterian Church of Galesburg.  They called me this week to let me know that they are donating $1000 to Lombard because they love the work we are doing, and wanted to help us continue to positively impact student's lives.  There are no words for how appreciative I am for this unexpected gift, and can't wait to put this money to good use!

Lombard Acts of Kindness Day is next Friday, October 9.  If you still aren't sure what this is, please take the time to check out this website - http://takeastandclub.weebly.com/ This is a student led activity and it is absolutely amazing!  Essentially, this is an opportunity for students and staff to pledge to do an act of kindness on behalf of Lombard.  However, this is also open to people all over the world to do the same.  As of right now, this movement is not only getting pledges from other states, but also other COUNTRIES!  We have people from Brazil and Egypt signed up!  Be a part of something special!

It's Mid Term ALREADY!

9/23/2015

It's hard to believe, but it's already midterm this week!  It seems like school just started, but here we are.  If you find that your child is struggling in any way, please do not hesitate to contact us before we contact you.  The different teams of teachers have a team meeting every day, and they are available to help all parents and meet as needed.  The different team meeting times are listed below, and one of the reasons our schedule is set up in this manner is to make sure all of your child's teachers are easily accessible all at once through a face to face meeting or even a conference call.

6th grade - 8:27-9:09
7th grade - 11:56-12:39
8th grade - 1:26-2:09
Team 21 (encore/fine arts) - 9:55-10:37

Please call 309-973-2004 and ask for Mr. Sutton if you want to set up a meeting with your child's team of teachers :)

Ask your child who their advisory teacher is!

8/20/2015

This year Lombard Middle School built a schedule in which we have a 20 minute advisory period to begin the day within all three grade levels.  This class period is meant to be the student's opportunity to connect with a small group of students and one staff member throughout the school year.  The middle school years are difficult enough, but we have a very large school with over 75 staff members and almost 500 kids.  It is very easy for a student to feel lost and alone.  However, our advisory period is meant to address this head on.  Please take the time to ask your child who their advisory teacher is and what they are doing during this class period each day!

Yesterday was a GREAT first day of school.  We spent a large portion of the day teaching expectations and the kids behaved and participated fantastically!  I am so proud of them all.  We will continue on our 2pm early dismissal through next week, and it is our goal to get the chromebooks passed out hopefully sometime very soon.

Make sure you check out the pictures below.  They are from our end of the day assembly.  I'm still trying to decide if the kids or the staff had more fun.  WE ARE LOMBARD!
